In the early 1900s Issui published several woodblock-printed books which included mostly pictures of flowers and (or) birds. Fifteen pictures from one of these books, entitled Zuan Hyakudai (i.e., One Hundred Decorative Designs), are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The flowers and birds were drawn in a semi-abstract way using curved lines and bold colors that were not always true to life. This drawing style is called Rinpa (i.e., Ko[rin] school [pa]) in honor of one of the style’s originator – Kōrin Ogata. To see more pictures from this book click here.
